Leonela

Don Quixote

Leonela, Camilla’s handmaid since childhood, becomes both confidante and accomplice in the household crisis set in motion by Anselmo’s test of his wife’s fidelity. Her own concealed affair binds her to Camilla’s secret, compromises Camilla’s ability to discipline her, and helps sustain Anselmo’s mistaken confidence. When Anselmo later finds a man escaping from Leonela’s room, that same secrecy turns her into the possible source of information capable of overturning what he believes.

Identity and Place in the Household

Leonela and Camilla were brought up together in Camilla’s father’s house. After Camilla married Anselmo, she kept Leonela with her, retaining a companion whose closeness reached back to childhood. Leonela was not merely a servant who happened to be present: Camilla initially gave her specific responsibility for remaining at her side and helping preserve the household’s propriety during Anselmo’s absence.

That familiar position gave Leonela access to the private space in which Anselmo arranged his experiment. He instructed Camilla to receive his friend Lothario in his absence and treat him as she would her husband. Camilla objected, but submitted to Anselmo’s wishes. She told Leonela to dine before her and not leave her side, so that the two women would not be alone with Lothario. Leonela did not consistently obey. She left them together, and her independent priorities began to loosen the safeguards Camilla had tried to establish.

Her Affair and Camilla’s Secret

Leonela’s own romantic life emerges when Camilla laughs at her elaborate alphabet of praise for Lothario. Leonela admits that she has had an affair with a young man of good birth from the same city. Camilla’s response is anxious rather than approving: she worries that Leonela’s conduct could endanger her own reputation and urges her to keep the matter from both Anselmo and Lothario.

Leonela promises secrecy but soon brings her lover into the house at night. Camilla repeatedly becomes aware of his visits, yet does not reprimand her. Because Leonela knows about Camilla and Lothario, Camilla fears that exposing Leonela would expose herself in turn. Their relationship thus changes from the intimacy of longtime companions into a mutual concealment that gives Leonela room to act and leaves Camilla less able to govern her own household.

The arrangement has consequences beyond the two women. One morning Lothario sees a man leaving Anselmo’s house. He does not recognize him as Leonela’s lover and instead suspects that Camilla has been unfaithful to him as she was to Anselmo. Leonela’s secret therefore supplies the misleading evidence that renews Lothario’s jealousy. A private affair in the servant’s quarters becomes entangled with the larger deception consuming the household.

The Staged Proof of Camilla’s Fidelity

When Lothario tells Camilla that Anselmo plans to hide in a closet and watch her, she reproves him for provoking this further danger. She nevertheless devises a performance that will make Anselmo believe she has rejected Lothario. Leonela participates in the scene: she appears to worry about Camilla’s anger and the dagger, and responds as though Camilla’s threatened vengeance were genuine. The performance gives Anselmo, listening unseen, a carefully shaped impression of his wife’s virtue.

Leonela’s part matters because the scene depends on appearances being sustained in front of the hidden observer. Her apparent concern helps make Camilla’s anger and distress seem spontaneous rather than staged. Anselmo interprets what he hears as evidence that Camilla is loyal to him; in fact, the episode strengthens his confidence while leaving the affair between Camilla and Lothario concealed. Leonela’s participation does not reveal that she directs the plan, but it shows her helping maintain the household’s layered performance of secrecy.

Discovery and the Unresolved Revelation

Anselmo’s confidence does not end the pattern of concealment. One night he hears movement in Leonela’s room and finds the door held against him. When he forces his way inside, he sees a man escaping through the window. Leonela tells him that the man belongs to her and claims he is her husband, but Anselmo does not believe her explanation. In his anger, he threatens her with a dagger and demands the truth.

Faced with that threat, Leonela begs him not to harm her and promises information more important than anything he can imagine. The episode leaves the promised disclosure pending: the available account establishes her offer but not what she ultimately says. The moment nevertheless marks a reversal. Earlier, Leonela’s secret gave her leverage over Camilla and helped misdirect Lothario; now Anselmo’s discovery places her own secret under pressure, and she presents knowledge as her means of protection.

Narrative Role

Leonela’s plotline parallels Camilla’s without making their positions identical. Both women conceal relationships from Anselmo, but Leonela’s affair is also the secret that prevents Camilla from exercising authority over her. Their shared silence becomes a practical bond, and the consequences of that bond spread through the household: Lothario misreads the departing lover, Camilla stages a false demonstration of fidelity, and Anselmo mistakes performance for proof.

As a longtime attendant, Leonela stands at the intersection of private intimacy and household order. Her actions are not the central experiment Anselmo intends to conduct, yet they repeatedly alter its course. Her final promise of a consequential disclosure leaves her story suspended at the point where concealment may give way to revelation, without confirming what that revelation contains.
